This will be the last entry to get linked from my blog to Facebook. I do get all kinda “tin-hatty” sometimes with Facebook, when they change privacy settings, layout or some-such, but I calm down fairly quickly. This last thing with the reported decapitation videos, though, really made me feel quite sick. The comment section included a threat that if such a video appeared on their page, the account would be closed down. I’m jumping before this even happens.
Facebook can quite happily trot out reasons why the videos of people being murdered should be on the site, and some comments on the BBCwebsite are pro freedom of speech, but seriously ..
After spending a moment wondering what I can do, I decided to close my account permanently. I’ve not checked the videos, and have no intention to. Part of me really hopes this is an elaborate hoax. I am only one single account on Facebook, so their servers won’t even notice I’ve gone but I don’t want to have any part in an organisation, no matter how small, which seems to be so twisted as to consider that there isn’t any graphic violence in these videos
We’ve all heard the theory that we are connected to everyone else by only six other connections, so I’ve a very real concern about how long it will take for this video to arrive in Espoo. I guess I might need to have a pre-emptive chat with the older duckling.
Allow me get all biblical on you:
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil,
who put darkness for light and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. (Isaiah 5:20)
That’s all I’ve got to say on the matter. I can see some confused moments at work when I wonder what on earth I can do without Facebook, but I’m sure I’ll get over it.
The BBC article also has a side link to an article about a facebook page that jokes about rape. To be honest, I should have thought about jumping much earlier. They also refuse to take this down.
So that’s it then. Actually felt really painful to push the delete button, but glad I did it. As mentioned to Mum and my brother, there are many bad things in the world that we are stuck with. Facebook is one of those which I feel I can do without. There is much good on Facebook and it helps with keeping in touch with family, but this is a stand I can make. It’s a damn site easier than becoming vegetarian (I raise my hat to friends and family who have taken this step).
